How to determine my soil type

In by Mack Dalley

NOT SURE OF YOUR SOIL TYPE?  The following simple exercise will help you determine your soil type.  This information will be needed by your Skydrop Smart Sprinkler Controller  .

Here are a few items that you will need:

1.  Something to dig with

garden trowel

2.  A clear quart jar

clear jar

FIRST, start with a good sampling of soil from your yard.  Take 4 or 5 sample scoops from different locations in your yard and mix them together well. (The soil sample should be taken about 4″ down from the top of the soil, NOT just scraping the surface).

SECOND, using the mixture of soil, fill the clear quart jar about a third to half full.

THIRD, fill the jar with water, leaving half an inch or so of air space at the top.

FOURTH, put a lid on the jar and shake to mix well.  (soil should be suspended and move freely in the water).

FIFTH, let the soil / water solution settle. (for fine soils this may take some time, even overnight).

soil test

As the soil/water mixture sits it will settle.  The soil that is the most coarse (sand) will fall first, creating a layer on the bottom of the jar.  Each soil type will create a unique layer as each of them settles out of the water.  You will know your soil type when you see the soil layer that is the largest by percentage of overall soil in the jar.
